Mark Rafferty '13

Jordan - Amman

Mark Rafferty graduated from Tufts in 2013, where he majored in International Relations (Middle East and South Asia) and Arabic. At Tufts, he participated in the EPIIC 2009-2010 Colloquium on South Asia and was a member of NIMEP for three years. He participated in the group's 2011 fact finding trip to Iraqi Kurdistan, where he researched the region's trade and social ties with Iran. Mark currently lives in Jordan and works for Questscope, a social development organization providing alternative education options to marginalized youth, and he plans to pursue a career working in social development in the region.

Madeline Hall '13

Turkey - Afyonkarahisar

Madeline Hall graduated from Tufts in the spring of 2013 with a major in International Relations [Middle East Regional Focus] and a minor in Mass Communications and Media Studies. She is currently serving as a Fulbright Grantee in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey teaching English at Afyon Kocatepe University. Having studied at Bogazici University in Istanbul in the fall of 2011, and traveled with NIMEP to Turkey to research journalistic freedoms and the revision of the current Turkish Constitution, her Fulbright grant offers an excellent opportunity to give back to the country that greatly influenced her undergraduate life. Upon her return to the United States, she intends to pursue a career in social work in Atlanta, GA. 

Stephanos Karavas '13

United States - Boston

Stephanos Karavas majored in History with a concentration in the Middle East and minoring in Political Science with a concentration in Foreign Policy Analysis. Having traveled extensively throughout Greece and the Middle East, Stephanos has a deep interest in the affairs of the Mediterranean world and broadened his experience by co-leading NIMEP's 2012 fact-finding mission to Tunisia and researching constitutional reform. Stephanos participated in NIMEP's 2010 fact-finding mission to Kuwait and the UAE where he investigated the subject of women's political rights in Kuwait. Stephanos enjoys exploring the Middle East through other dimensions in addition to research, such as popular culture, cinema, music and through playing the Oud. His main area of interest in the Middle East includes the rise of Turkey, its effects on the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean and its regional implications on a wider level. He is fluent in English, Modern Greek, Spanish and is currently learning Arabic.
