Discourse

Discourse is a student-run interdisciplinary journal dedicated to the power of reason and the exchange of ideas. We provide an inclusive platform for reasoned exchanges and prescriptive analysis of both domestic and international issues through various media, including research papers, dueling essays, roundtable discussions, poetry, prose, art and photography.

Discourse was founded in 2007 to provide a democratic forum for the discussion of contemporary dilemmas both of international and domestic concern. The journal explores a diversity of academic thought and perspectives, primarily from students but additionally scholars and practitioners. Student pieces typically include excerpts from Senior Theses, research papers, policy reviews and field notes, along with professional opinions in roundtable discussions and interviews. Discourse also publishes various artwork, including poetry, fiction, visual art and photography, to illuminate the issue’s theme. Past issues have delved into the themes of social justice, revolutions, identity, geopolitics, violent conflict, the human condition and powerlessness. While the journal is often political in content, it is not in nature; Discourse is not a vehicle with any specific political or intellectual agenda, but rather the rational apparatus for expressing a multitude of discordant opinions and theses.

Discourse’s Staff is comprised of a dozen undergraduate students, selected each fall, who carry out the submission process, carefully sift through each piece and, after an extensive editing process, compile the work to be published in the journal. This year, the positions include Content Editors, Copy Editors, Poetry and Prose Editors, Arts and Photography Editors and a Social Media Chair. Each of our Staff members has the opportunity to be involved with the larger IGL network and gain editorship experience upon joining. Discourse has traditionally been published biannually, and anticipates a February publishing date for our next issue. Any questions or submissions can be directed to submissions.discourse@gmail.com.
