The Alexandra Boulat Award for Photojournalism

This award was established by the Institute and its Exposure program to promote the creation of documentary work with a social purpose. The juried award is give to a current Tufts student or alumni to fund a documentary project.

The award is named after Alexandra Boulat, a co-founder of VII Photo Agency and was created to acknowledge the inspiration and mentorship she provided to Exposure and its students. Alexandra Boulat (1962-2007) was an award-winning French photographer, known for her compelling images of people affected and displaced by war.

The first recipient of the award was Samuel James (A’10), who is an alumnus of several IGL programs and is now the program coordinator for the Program for Narrative and Documentary Practice. He used the award to continue his work looking at the ongoing struggle for power, land and oil in Nigeria.
