We welcome Professor Rana Mitter from the University of Oxford to talk about his new book - China's Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism. The book reviews China's radical reassessment of its collective memory of the brutal Sino-Japanese War. Prof. Mitter argues that this new view on its World War II experience is central to China's newfound confidence abroad and to mounting nationalism at home.

Prof. Mitter specializes in the history of Republican China. He is Professor of History and Politics of Modern China at Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations and, until this month, Director of Oxford's Dickson Poon China Centre. Professor Mitter is a proficient writer and contributes regularly to newspaper, television, and radio program. His book China’s War with Japan, 1937-45: The Struggle for Survival was named as a 2013 Book of the Year in the Financial Times and the Economist, was named a 2014 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title, and won the 2014 RUSI/Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature. Prof. Mitter was educated at Kings College, Cambridge, and was also a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 2015 and appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours for his services to education.

No prior knowledge is required. And we look forward to seeing you all!
