Gendered Bodies, Trafficking and Labour in South Asia

Join the Tufts South Asian Regional Committee for our 2021 interdisciplinary panel on gender, labor and trafficking in South Asia. SARC invites you to a multifaceted discussion ranging from sex work and gendered labor during the Second World War and sex trafficking in the Sundarbans, to organ trafficking in contemporary South Asia.

Dr Saradamoyee Chatterjee (Chair) is an Affiliated Lecturer at the Centre of Development Studies, University of Cambridge. At the Centre of Development Studies, Saradamoyee leads a course on migration, and human trafficking offered to the MPhil student. She is also Bye-Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge and Research Fellow at Cambridge Centre for Applied Research in Human Trafficking (CCARHT). She researched the illegal trade in human organs, focused on India.

Urvi Khaitan is a PhD student in economic and social history at the University of Oxford. Her research interests are in gender and labour in colonial India, and her thesis focuses on women in the wartime economy in Second World War South Asia.

Amrita DasGupta is a doctoral student at the Department of Gender Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Amrita does research on transnational migration, borders, sex work, climate crisis in the lower deltaic Bengal. Her PhD deals with India and Bangladesh borderlands and trafficking in humans.
