Responding to Mass Atrocity: A Conversation on the Tigray Region of Ethiopia
The event will be presented by Alex de Waal, Lwam Gidey, and Delia Burns, and moderated by Abiodun Williams - see speaker bios below.
Over one year ago now, armed conflict broke out in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia between the Tigray Defence Forces and the Ethiopian National Defense Force accompanied by their allies. In the first 8 months of the war, unspeakable atrocities were committed en masse against civilians in Tigray, including genocidal killings, sexualized violence, and starvation crimes. Back in April, the UNFPA predicted more than 22,000 women and girls would require clinical treatment for rape, and in June, USAID predicted that 900,000 would face famine. As the war has spread beyond the borders of Tigray, millions of civilians continue to suffer in Tigray and throughout the rest of the country. This conversation will outline the atrocities committed, examine the resulting suffering, and pose questions for what should be done to ensure reparations and compensation to victims, survivors, and their families.
