SARC: Political Resistance in South Asia Symposium, Day 2
The Tufts South Asian Regional Committee is excited to announce its 2022 Symposium taking place on February 10 and 11. The theme of this event is Political Resistance in South Asia. The students aim to explore various ways that resistance is actively taking place in the subcontinent, analyzing both violent and nonviolent political action across class, caste, and gender, through four panels. Get an in-depth look into politics of resistance in Bangladesh and the role of Muslim women, class-based resistance in labor, art as a form of nonviolent dissent, and anti-coup protests in Myanmar. The symposium aims to provide an overview of the vast diversity of resistance movements in South Asia, the individuals involved in these struggles, and the mediums being used to convey the message. 9am Panel 1: Political Resistance in Myanmar: Coups, Protests, and the Rohingya Crisis

Dr. Moe Thuzzar is an ISEAS Fellow & Lead Researcher (socio-cultural), at the ASEAN Studies Centre, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. She is also a key member of the Myanmar Studies Programme at ISEAS. Moe provides analyses (on ASEAN and on Myanmar) for Channel News Asia's news programs. She was also involved in advising Myanmar's ASEAN chairmanship in 2014. In addition to monitoring Myanmar’s reforms, Moe’s other research interests include urbanization, environment, disaster management and humanitarian assistance, ASEAN integration issues and ASEAN's dialogue relations.
Dr. Jacques P. Leider is a historian of Myanmar and has headed the research centres of the Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient in Yangon and Chiang Mai. He is currently the head of the EFEO office in Bangkok. A trained teacher with extensive professional experience, he had stints in diplomacy and consulting with UN organizations on contemporary conflict issues.

Dr. Prasannan Parathasarathi joined the Boston College faculty in the fall of 1998 and is currently the Chairperson and Professor of History. He teaches courses on modern South Asia, global history, and environmental history. He is now engaged in a study of environmental change, agriculture, and labor in nineteenth-century South India.
Ms. Nazma Akter is the founder and Executive Director of Awaj Foundation. She has been fighting to improve workers’ rights, especially women workers, in the garment sector in Bangladesh for over 32 years. Nazma is also the President of Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation, one of the largest union federations in Bangladesh, and co-chair of Asia Pacific Women’s Committee of IndustriALL Global Union.
4pm, SEC 112: Movie Screening and Discussion: "Haider"
Haider is a poet who returns to Kashmir at the height of the renewed conflict and discovers that his father has disappeared. The film revolved around Haider, who embarks on a dangerous journey to find his father and ends up getting dragged into the politics of the state. Haider is played by Shahid Kapoor; the film is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
