This past summer, I worked with IGL Alumnus Anoop Swaminath (EPIIC) as a Business Segmentation Analyst Intern. This internship was offered through the IGL’s alumni and friends’ network as an effort to provide students with remote opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of the summer, I worked to provide a deliverable highlighting a major consumer-facing industry. I learned a tremendous amount about myriad industries through sales prospecting and will take these skills with me as I look to careers post-Tufts.
There were many takeaways from this internship, the first being that there are few things you can’t learn yourself. When you go to work at a startup, expect to wear some different and occasionally uncomfortable hats. If you embrace that discomfort, it goes a super long way in encouraging growth. While being taught something might allow for faster absorption, when teaching myself a new skill it tends to stick with me a lot longer. Whether that was fiddling with the advanced excel options, producing sales statements, or crafting a presentation, I am thrilled to take the knowledge I developed with me to future roles.
Another key takeaway from this experience was to be constantly iterating. It took a lot more iterations thank I thought it would take for me to produce high-quality work I was proud of.
During my internship as a Business Segmentation Analyst, I also learned that presentation is key. You can produce all the great content you want but conveying it in a commanding and concise way is equally as important as collecting great data or information. One of the most useful skills I learned this summer is how to take lots of data or information and make it digestible. In addition, I learned how to use features of Adobe and Microsoft suite applications to enhance my presentation abilities.
I want to thank the IGL and Anoop Swaminath again for the opportunity to work for an incredibly exciting stealth startup!
