This year's PNDP class has been working on a range of small local projects, including learning to observe and describe everyday scenes and documenting recent high school homecomings.
Last week, Stacey D. Clarkson spoke to the class. For the past 15 years, Clarkson has served as the Art Director of Harper’s Magazine, the oldest continuously-published literary journal in the United States. Under her leadership, the magazine has become an internationally-recognized platform for showcasing excellence in fine art and photography. In class she went through dozens of projects she has edited and supported over the years, covering a wide range of subjects including desert wildlife at night, the 2014 Winter Olympics, drone warfare and surveillance, alternative photographic processes, and our place in the Cosmos. Through her work in publishing, she highlighted for students themes such as how to approach and tell stories about complex subjects, the importance of developing and sustaining an individual voice, and the role of creativity in overcoming challenges while working in the field. Sophomore Eliza Davis, a student in the course, wrote, "It was a really interesting talk about how to craft a story and how complicated the production of a final product can be. It was great seeing the variety of subjects covered by Harper's as well as the step-by-step process of producing the art." Junior Kate Sienko, a student in last year’s PNDP class wrote, “I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to hear her about her own experiences as a storyteller/creator/artist and how, as the Art Director at Harper's, she is both continuing tradition and pushing boundaries for future generations.”
