When I applied to the Joint Research Project through ALLIES last fall, I didn’t quite know what I was getting into. Over the next few months, through planning meetings with fellow JRP-ers at Tufts and the Naval Academy, and with help from the IGL, our trip and research plans slowly crystallized into form.

This summer I had the opportunity to participate in the ALLIES Joint Research Project along with three other Tufts students – Daniel Lewis (A’20), Nicole Bardasz (A’20) and Michael Olesberg (A’19). We were accompanied by three cadets from the U.S. Military Academy and three midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy.

This summer, the IGL has partially funded some of the costs accrued between my two part-time internships. One internship is working at The World Affairs Council, a national nonprofit that hosts events and recruits speakers with the goal of stimulating discussion on international affairs.

ALLIES joint research project: Japan

We met with scholars, academics, military officers, and government officials at places like the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), the National Defense Academy, the U.S. Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Prime Minister’s Office.

On April 7th-8th, Tufts students participated in a live-action simulation called FieldEx, hosted by civilian-military relations organization ALLIES. FieldEx combines political, diplomatic, and military components in a peacekeeping and stability scenario that plays out on a paintball field.

On Wednesday 4/19, Tufts ALLIES met with Nicholas Birnback A '92, the current Head of Public Affairs for United Nations Peacekeeping. Starting in 1996, Birnback has been part of U.N. peace missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Eritrea, East Timor and Somalia.

On Saturday afternoon, over sixty people – including students from Tufts University, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Wellesley College, and the University of Northern Georgia – engaged in the three-hour-long Diplomatic Crisis Simulation.
